Born in New Zealand, it was Kali's indigenous Northern Punjab heritage that influenced her passion for Indian cottage crafts. Since the age of twelve, she has cultivated the fine art of knitting, loom work, weaving, tatting, lace making, felting, dyeing, screen-printing, embroidery, hand stitching, and crewel work.
By the age of 22, inspired by the 60's fashion era, Kali started her own boutique in Hamilton, working predominantly with muslin, dyeing and embellishing bolts of fabric, and creating one-of-a-kind garments for exclusive clientele.
Years later in India, Kali evolved her artistry and training of both hand and machine embroidery design with the traditional culture of mirror work. Ultimately, Kali merged skillful technique with her outrageous use of textural applications to create a sumptuous and distinctive collection of unique fabrics and accessory garments.
Kali moved to America in 2000 and launched her signature label to wide appeal and market recognition. Today, the Kali Basi line of women's apparel and accessories are proudly hand made in the USA and sold to retailers nationwide.
